Los Alabados.
This special, holiday edition, focuses on Cantos de Alabanza, the liturgical hymns associated to the centuries-old rituals and ceremonies cultivated by the Catholic brotherhoods known as Los Penitentes in the small towns along the mountains of Rio Grande del Norte. The alabados are slow and mournful songs associated to the Semana Santa processions, the funerals, New Year Days and other community or ceremonial events. Folk musicians and scholars tell the story of this old tradition. This is a program of the special series “Raíces: Songs and Tales of Rio Arriba.”
