Juan Gutiérrez: Master Plenero.
A conversation with virtuoso percussionist Juan Gutiérrez, a master of Afro-Puerto Rican folk music and dance who received the 1996 NEA National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award for those who greatly contribute to traditional arts. Gutiérrez co-founded Los Pleneros de la 21, a Spanish Harlem-based ensemble considered New York’s preeminent ambassadors of Bomba and Plena, Puerto Rican traditions with deep African and Creole roots.
