THURSDAY, JULY 11
PROGRAM # 8648 12:00 PM PT
Mariachi Cultural Heritage.
A renowned historian, musicologist, and long-time researcher of Mexico’s mariachi, discusses the evolution of the mariachi tradition, and examines the origins of the emblematic “Son de la Negra.” He comments on the state of mariachis in the cradle of this music: Western Mexico, the new energy infused by folk festivals and mariachera women in the US, the recognition of Mariachi music as a cultural heritage of humanity, and the way new generations are keeping this tradition alive. In addition, a leading member of a “big-harp” group from Tierra Caliente (the Hot Lands) talks about their maestros, the family and religious festivities where they perform, the album they just recorded with the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label, and the rooting of this tradition in California.
Guest: Alvaro Ochoa Serrano, Historian, Musicologist, Colegio de Michoacán; Author of the Books: “Mitote, Fandango y Mariacheros,” “Manual del Mariachi,” and “La Música Va a Otra Parte – Mariache México-USA,” Fresno, CA; Leonel Mendoza, Co-coordinator, Los Originarios del Plan, Turlock, CA.
