The Legacy of La Malinche.
La Malinche, a Nahua woman best known for serving as interpreter and advisor for Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conqueror of the Aztec Empire, is synonymous in Mexico with treason and deceit. But Malinche was a woman who despite surviving a life of enslavement, showed talent as a linguist and negotiator. Her complicated legacy is the subject of controversy. An arts exhibit in Denver and Albuquerque showcases the story of Malinche and invites people to reflect on who she was, her experience as a colonized and then empowered Indigenous woman, and, being the mother of one of the first Mestizos in the continent, the meaning of the dual identity of being bilingual and bicultural in what would emerge as a Mestizo society. This program is to mark Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that celebrates Mexicans’ national identity.
