This is a conversation with the headliner and the director of the Mexican film “El Guardián de la Memoria”, which is about to premiere in theaters across the United States after having won the Ariel Prize, the highest recognition of the Mexican Academy of Cinema as the best documentary. Through the testimony of survivors, the film tells the dramatic story of the border town of Guadalupe, about how it has been devastated and left in ruins by drug cartels and the government, about the disappeared and clandestine graves in the desert, and about the lawyer who rose as a leading advocate for displaced families and has become a pioneer in the cause of the right to political asylum for Mexicans fleeing the brutal violence. They also comment on what the imprisonment in New York of Genaro García Luna, the former right-hand man of the president who declared a “war on narco”, means, the reality under the new López Obrador government, and the blows to political asylum in the period of the Trump administration.
