This is a conversation with Mexican folk dancing master Herman Martínez, a life-long advocate for bailables folklóricos in Colorado and throughout the Southwest. Maestro Martínez, a founder of the almost five-decades-old Asociación Nacional de Grupos Folklóricos, talks about his cultural influences growing up in small towns of Southern Colorado Rio Grande area, the impact of the Chicano movement’s cultural activism on the birth of a nationally-organized push for Mexican folk dancing groups, and the efforts to keep alive and thriving the centuries-old traditions of the Spanish-speaking peoples of the Rio Arriba region.
