This archival, repeat program features a conversation with saxophonist David Sanchez, at a time when he was hailed as a rising star in jazz. Acclaimed as one of the most innovative saxophonists of his generation, Sanchez spoke about his beginnings in jazz music. He wanted to be a percussionist, but ended up in love with sax. He played with Dizzy Gillespie and Eddie Palmieri, among other greats. In this visit to Línea Abierta’s studios in San Francisco, he talks about his album, “Melaza”, featuring Latin jazz and Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms. Years later, he won a Grammy award. This conversation was originally aired on December 6, 2,000.
