THURSDAY, MARCH 17
PROGRAM # 9564 11:00 AM PT
Extra Edition: Los San Patricios. (Program Repeat).
Hundreds of mostly Irish immigrants from the United States deserted and fought in the trenches alongside the Mexican army during the 1846-48 US invasion of Mexico. They were known as the San Patricio Battalion or Los Colorados. Many of the survivors were treated as traitors and punished by hanging. For Mexicans, who remember them every year on Saint Patrick’s Day, they are heroes. Folk Celtic musician Paddy Moloney, in collaboration with Ry Cooder, celebrates the “San Patricio,” in an album that fuses Mexican and Celtic rhythms with popular Mexican singers. In another story, a documentary tells the story of San Patricios. This program features an archival interview with the filmmaker and related Mexican-Irish folk songs.
Guests: (Segments of Songs from the Album San Patricio) “Batallón San Patricio,” Camperos de Valles; “March to the Battle,” The Chieftains, with actor Liam Neeson; “St. Patrick Battalion,” The Chieftains; “El Chivo,” The Mockingbirds; Mark Day, Journalist, Documentary Filmmaker, Los San Patricios, San Diego, CA.
