Duranguito.
Residents of El Paso are waging a battle against plans to demolish historic buildings and build a sports arena in the Duranguito district, the oldest neighborhood in the downtown area. Advocates blame developers with racist maneuvering and are suing the city for the threats to displace neighbors, civil rights violations against Mexican American elders and other issues. Meanwhile, a similar battle against gentrification is being waged in Los Angeles, in the Eastside barrio of Boyle Heights, where Mexican neighbors and Mariachi musicians are being displace from this traditionally Mexican cultural center by development and the soaring rents.
