PROGRAM # 8191 12:00 PM PT

Day of the Dead.

In Mexico City, the Day of the Dead parade is dedicated to the victims of the recent earthquakes while in the city of Washington a procession and an altar are the ways demonstrators remembered those immigrants who died this year in US detention centers. Listeners celebrate the tradition of Día de los Muertos by sharing on the air Calavera poems, the satirical rhymes that make fun of loved ones or famous people. Also, the San Francisco symphony has been celebrating the Day of the Dead with a mix of Mexican concerts and altars that showcase the different traditions to honor the dead around the world.

Guest: Martha Rodriguez Salazar, Curator, Day of the Dead, Davies Symphony Hall, San Francisco, CA.

Medical Aid in Dying. A healthcare advocate celebrates new laws in several states that give terminally-ill adults the option to receive medical aid to have a peaceful end of life. She also comments on the reaction against those local and state laws by a Republican fraction of members of Congress, and the support they have received from two Latino Democratic lawmakers. She also comments on the long and painful agony suffered by Miguel Carrasquillo, a young Puerto Rican whose case helped galvanize public support for medical aid in dying.

Guest: Patricia González-Portillo, National Latino Communications Director, Compassion and Choices, Los Angeles, CA.
