PROGRAM # 8603 12:00 PM PT
Pioneering Chicano Arts Space Evicted.
After almost 50 years as a community anchor in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District, influential gallery and arts collective Galería de la Raza was handed an eviction notice and forced to leave the building, which looks now abandoned and in disrepair. The community icon fell victim of the massive rent hikes that are hitting hard the Bay Area. Prominent local artists share memories about this pioneering arts space and comment on its place in the history of the Chicano movement, the Latino arts scene, and the community at large, as well as its foreseeable future. They call Galería “the Notre Dame of our community” and “the mystic Aztlan of Chicano artists.
Guests: Ani Rivera, Executive Director, Galería de la Raza, San Francisco, CA; Leticia Hernández, Poet, Spoken-Word Artist, Educator, San Francisco, CA; Lou Dematteis, Documentary Filmmaker, The Other Barrio, San Francisco, CA.
