PROGRAM # 8792 12:00 PM PT
Corridos de Río Arriba.
From the raid to a courthouse by a group of insurgents to the death in Viet Nam of a Chicano soldier to the flooding of a small town, corridistas in the Rio Grande del Norte region have for centuries brought the news about violent events and natural disasters, extolled the exploits of local heroes and the virtues of the homeland, and advocated for the downtrodden. In this program, experts comment on popular corridos and legendary corridistas in New Mexico and Colorado. They also shed light on the roots of this musical tradition, including the “Inditas,” the musical style considered the forerunner of the narrative ballads of corrido.
