In the small town of Salinas, CA, four Latino men were shot to death by police officers last year. Those incidents have sparked outrage, protests and calls for a federal investigation in this largely Latino city. Still, unlike similar incidents in Ferguson and New York against Black unarmed residents, these cases have gone largely unnoticed in the nation. Distinguished Latino intellectuals known as Los Macarturos engage in a conversation with local Latino leaders. They discuss current proposals for police reform at the local and federal level, as well as in at least twelve states around the nation.
Guests: Tony Barrera, Councilmember, District 2, Salinas, CA; Frank Alvarado Sr, Police Reform Activist and Father of a Victim of Police Violence, Latinos Unidos, Salinas, CA; Ruth Behar, Cultural Anthropologist, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI; Rueben Martínez, Owner, Martinez Books and Arts Gallery, Santa Ana, CA.
