Trauma of Detention Follows Refugee Children to the Classroom

Hundreds of thousands of children have come in the last two years to the United States, with or without the parents, and fleeing violence in Central America. Often they end up in detention centers. The challenges don’t end when they are free, but continue in a quieter way when the children go to school. Valeria Fernández has been following the story of one mother and her daughter who were detained for months. Now she reports on the daughter’s difficult return to school. This feature is part of our series, “Hablando de la Raza”, and it was produced with the support of the Institute for Justice and Journalism.
