In this week’s state primary in Oregon, state legislator Andrea Salinas clinched the Democratic nomination in the battle for the newly formed 6th Congressional District. Salinas defeated a well-funded challenger backed by the Democratic establishment. Salinas is favored to win in November, which would make her the first Latina elected to Congress from Oregon. The state previously had only five congressional representatives, but population growth in the census gave it a sixth seat. This is the first time in 40 years that Oregon has gained seats in the House.
