Radio Bilingüe and Samuel Orozco Recognized in Mexico with the José Vasconcelos Public Radio Award
Radio Educación, Mexico’s pioneering public radio station, institution of the nation’s Ministry of Culture, awards the 2022 José Vasconcelos Recognition of Merit in Public Radio to Radio Bilingüe and Samuel Orozco, the director of Radio Bilingüe’s national news service.
The recognition is granted by Radio Educación on each anniversary of its founding by the then Secretary of Education José Vasconcelos in 1924 to individuals and institutions “that have contributed, in a consistent and relevant way, to the construction of public service in radio broadcasting… through initiatives that have been of notorious influence or relevance for the development of public media in Mexico or the world.”
This year, the recognition is given to Radio Bilingüe for “the invaluable work it does as the leading Latino public radio network and producer of content in Spanish for the public broadcasting system in the United States” and for “representing those who dream and work for democratic media that’s at the service of the people and particularly the migrant population.”
The individual recognition is given to Samuel Orozco “for his important journalistic career path” and for “his contribution -through an exemplary professional exercise- to guarantee the right to information of the Spanish-speaking population of the United States.”
The recognition award will be delivered in Mexico City this Wednesday, November 30.
Radio Bilingüe is a network of non-commercial, Latino-owned stations that distributes programming to about 100 affiliated stations across the country. Headquartered in Fresno, the network is the leading producer of news and information for Latinos in public broadcasting in the United States.
