After a Year of Pandemic, Quinceañera Celebrations Become “Sweet Sixteens”

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many to cancel their traditional Quinceañera celebrations. A year later, with decreasing infections and vaccinations increasing, public events are beginning to be allowed. This means that some young people are preparing to finally celebrate their beloved ritual, but this time as a “Sweet Sixteen.” Madi Bolaños, a reporter for KVPR public radio who is part of the Central Valley News Collaborative, attended a Quinceañera party for a Catholic family from a town in California’s Central Valley. She brings us this story.
