Radio Bilingüe Launches 40th Anniversary Year Celebration
With Special Musical and Remembrance Programs

Radio Bilingüe, Fresno, CA.

The Radio Bilingüe National Latino Public Radio Network celebrates 40 years on-air July 4, 2020 by commencing a year of special programming and appreciations to its listening audience and supporters throughout the U.S. and beyond. The birthday kicks off Saturday July 4, 5 a.m. – 2 p.m PDT, with broadcasts of treasures from the Radio Bilingüe musical archives of recordings from storied Latino music festivals organized by Radio Bilingüe and other Latino heritage groups.

Then on Monday July 6, 12 p.m. PDT, listeners may tune in for a special Línea Abierta (“Open Line”) – Radio Bilingüe’s flagship national call-in program – to hear historic on-air moments and a conversation between Hugo Morales, Radio Bilingüe’s co-founder and executive director, and Samuel Orozco, founder and executive producer of Radio Bilingüe’s award-winning national Latino news and information service – still the only of its kind in U.S. public media.

Organizing for Radio Bilingüe began in 1975 by farmworkers, artists, teachers and students for a single community radio station KSJV-FM for the San Joaquin Valley. Today Radio Bilingüe is the leading Latino public radio network and content producer in U.S. public radio, operating 24 FM non¬commercial stations in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Colorado, and a 24¬hour national satellite content service with journalism, information and cultural programming aired by 75 additional affiliate stations throughout the U.S. and always available at radiobilingue.org.

Hugo Morales says, “Radio Bilingüe chose July 4, 1980 for our very first broadcast to claim our freedom of speech and to open the public airwaves for Latinos to define our own narratives. In times of dire crisis such as we are seeing today, Radio Bilingüe is always there at the service of our listeners, to help them get through and to air their opinions. And in happy times – like this 40th anniversary celebration – it’s our listeners’ remarkable accomplishment along with us.”

Stay tuned for more Radio Bilingüe 40th anniversary special programs in the coming yea■
