New Mexico Fire Victims Ask for Inclusion in Federal Aid

Firefighters from around the country are still in New Mexico battling the country’s largest wildfire, which began in mid-April. The federal government is distributing emergency resources to rebuild burned structures and help those affected. However, many families who have been in the region for generations fear they will be left out of this assistance. These are the families who live on communal lands known as “mercedes” or land grants, which were granted to local communities by the Spanish crown or the Mexican government. Yasmin Khan visited the devastated area and reports from Las Vegas, New Mexico.
