Jaranero groups from all over California met in East L.A. to celebrate son jarocho in a historic event that is now celebrating its 15th year. The Encuentro is part of a movement of artists in favor of making this musical genre from Mexican’s coastal state of Veracruz flourish in California. With sones, fandango and zapateado, the jarana players are still capturing the imagination of children, young people, and senior citizens. Rubén Tapia was there.
