Public Actions in Favor of Immigration Reform on “Day Without Immigrants” – A young social media influencer called for a new “Day Without Immigrants” to coincide with February 14, the day US people celebrate love and friendship, in an effort to express love for the undocumented through support for immigration reform. The call to avoid work, school and shopping was supported by some lawmakers and celebrities. Some responded by taking to the streets, including a crowd that demonstrated in front of the White House.

Generous Blood Donor Saved by Outpouring of Support After Crash – When he was a young student, Jorge Sicuir, a young Guatemalan man, began donating blood and encouraged his younger brother to follow in his footsteps. Eventually, their parents became worried about their health because of the extent of their generosity in donating blood and platelets and begged them for moderation. In 2015, Jorge suffered a life-threatening accident. Upon learning of it, dozens of people rushed to donate blood. This story is particularly relevant in light of the country’s current blood supply crisis.

Mexican Journalists Continue to be Murdered; Urgent Protection Requested – Mexican journalist Heber López was murdered last week in his studio in the state of Oaxaca. He is the fifth journalist to be murdered so far this year in Mexico, prompting protests by reporters and human rights activists across the country. President López Obrador has vowed that the crimes will not go unpunished and has begun a series of public consultations to strengthen the ineffective system for the protection of journalists.
