50th Anniversary of March on Washington – 50 years after the historic March on Washington of 1963, in which Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his celebrate speech “I Have a Dream,” tens of thousands go to the place where the march for freedom and jobs culminated. The anniversary was commemorated with calls to extend the legacy of the march to the causes of immigrants, women and the most vulnerable. Homage to the Deportees – This Labor Day, a new headstone will be revealed with the full names of 28 migrant workers who died in 1948, when the plane that was deporting them to Mexico crashed. Legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote a song about them, who were never known by any other name than “deportees” in the media. For 65 years these immigrants have been buried in anonymity. Now, a writer from Fresno, California recovered the names of the fallen migrants and recreated the song together with a blues musician, also from the Central Valley.
