Former Police Officer Derek Chauvin Found Guilty in George Floyd’s Death – The unanimous guilty verdict against Derek Chauvin, the white police officer implicated in the murder of the African American man George Floyd, was met with relief around the country. Some see the decision as a watershed moment in moving toward fairer race relations in the United States. Latino activists and lawyers agreed that the verdict is only a first step in bringing to justice those police officers who have abused communities of color. Will Police Implicated in Recent Killings of Latino Youths be Held Accountable? – After the historic guilty verdict in the case of the white police officer who murdered George Floyd, our news director, Samuel Orozco, recalls notable cases of police violence in which helpless young Latinos were killed and officers were not held accountable. In his commentary, Orozco points out that many in Latino neighborhoods see the police as a hostile outside force and asks whether it is time to rethink and remake systems for community security.

In Georgia, Few Latinos are Vaccinated Against Covid-19 – The state of Georgia has some of the lowest rates of Covid-19 vaccinations in the country, and Latinos are the least likely to have gotten the vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control. To motivate them to get immunized, civil rights and public health leaders have launched vaccination campaigns and are urging the authorities to help Latino families. Yemille Castejón reports from Atlanta.
