Gun Violence Affects Thousands of Oakland Schoolchildren – This is the second part of our series on the effects of violence on children’s learning. A few weeks ago, we brought you the story of Jacqueline Funes, a girl who was paralyzed by a stray bullet, while she played outside her house in Oakland, California. Now, our reporter Zaidee Stavely takes a look at the children closest to her and the hidden wounds they bring with them to school. This special report was produced in collaboration with Renaissance Journalism’s Equity Reporting Project: Restoring the Promise of Education, with funding from the Ford Foundation.

Chilena Tunes From Oaxaca Gain Popularity in California – Chilenas are popular tunes in many communities in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, in southern Mexico. This musical genre is believed to have come from a mix of traditional music from the region and that brought by Chilean and Peruvian immigrants who came to Mexican port cities almost two centuries ago, on their way to California during the gold rush. Today, Mixteco migrants have brough their guitars and violins with them and revive this popular music in California’s Central Valley. Our correspondent Rubén Tapia visited the group Yoso Snuviko, originally from San Juan Mixtepec, in the town of Shafter, California. This feature is part of our series Raices: Los Maestros, about artists who are passing on their art to the next generation.
