Deshilado: An Art Alive in California’s Central Valley – Deshilado, or openwork, is the art of unraveling threads of material from a tablecloth, napkin, or bedspread, to create designs like flowers and stars. Many women in Mexico practice this art, and they pass it from generation to generation. In a small community in California’s San Joaquin Valley, an immigrant woman teaches her daughter this tradition, which she learned from her own mother in Guanajuato, Mexico. Juan Santiago visited the mother and daughter and has this story. This feature story is part of our series Raices: Stories About Grassroots Artists.
