Probe on Deaths at the hands of Cops. In New Mexico, a homeless man with mental problems was shot to death by Albuquerque police. Local residents are outraged and are protesting these actions. Some believe the police department uses excessive force when dealing with people with mental problems. The Department of Justice is proposing to reform the local police system, following an investigation which revealed serious problems. Relatives of the victims and activists demand further action and punishment to the officers involved in the recent shooting. Kent Paterson reports, Ruben Tapia voices the story.

Impending Obamacare Fines. Nearly one and a half million people enrolled in a health insurance plan through Covered California, less than a third of those who signed-up were Latinos. Most of the Latino population opted out of buying a health care plan, and next year they will have to pay a fine. Reporter, Araceli Martinez, from Los Angeles, talks with experts and those affected.

Parents Take Action on Common Core Standards. The new Common Core Standards in the schools could provide a better education for children who are learning English as a second language. But as we mentioned last week, some are still skeptical about how they would be implemented. Teachers are quickly struggling to learn the new teaching methods and they worry about the required exams, which could be detrimental to some children. In Oakland, California, a group of Spanish-speaking parents study and watch over these Common Core Standards to make sure they meet their children’s needs. Our news producer, Zaidee Stavely talked with them and has this story.
