In a Lead Poisoning Hotspot: What Happened to the Children? – Thousands of homes in cities surrounding a now shuttered battery factory in Southeast Los Angeles were found to be contaminated with lead, a neurotoxic substance that has been detected at high rates in the blood of children who grew up in these communities. In response, the state government agreed to the largest clean-up project of its kind in California’s history. Several years after the deadly contamination was identified, what has happened to the families suffering from health problems associated with lead poisoning? What about children and babies in those families? Rubén Tapia prepared this report, a collaboration with the Center for Health Journalism at the USC Annenberg School of Journalism.
