Proposal to Stop Gang Violence Emphasizes Counseling Instead of Guns – To reduce the number of shootings and violent crimes, the Fresno City Council in California’s Central Valley has approved funds to partially finance an innovative project known as “Advance Peace.” This project brings together rehabilitated gang members who now provide emotional support in the most violent neighborhoods to get them away from guns. “Advance Peace” is seen as an alternative to heavy-handed crime-fighting policies, and interest in it comes as a national debate heats up about investing in counseling programs instead of policing.
