Legendary Corridistas Tell Stories of Their Land: New Mexico and Colorado – For decades, what was known of the tragic deaths of activists Antonio Córdova and Rito Canales of Albuquerque was thanks to the lyrics of a song by the famous corridista Roberto Martínez. It is through the music of popular troubadours like Martínez that, for hundreds of years, generations of villagers in the Rio Grande del Norte region have learned about tragedies and natural disasters, the feats of local heroes and great virtues of their homeland. In this special report, part of the series “Raíces: Songs and Stories of Río Arriba,” legendary corridistas from New Mexico share the lyrics and melodies of corridos that have become part of Rio Arriba’s traditional songbook. This report was prepared by Rubén Tapia.
