Indigenous Peoples Gain Greater Recognition – Thanksgiving is celebrated this week, and it is also Native American Heritage Month. On this holiday, we feature two special reports. First, in honor of Native American Heritage Month, we look into a remarkable initiative in Los Angeles that culminated in the city government’s official recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day. The city action took place on the heels of October 12, which has been celebrated as Columbus Day by European descendants and mourned by Native Americans.
Heirs of Norteña Music Honor a Family Tradition – Some of the big names of Tejano Conjunto music may have disappeared from the stage, but their legend, their memories, and sometimes even their sound, lives on in their children and the generations that are following in their footsteps. Some examples are the Longorias and the Naranjos, who are forming their own musical careers and earning a place in the hearts of audiences, celebrating the tradition began by their elders. Ruben Tapia prepared this report based on interviews with young people at the Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio last May.
