Official Statistics on Arrests of Criminal Immigrants Questioned – US Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE) has announced that arrests of undocumented individuals has risen by nearly 40% so far under the current administration compared to last year, and that most of those arrested have a criminal record. Immigrants’ rights groups, however, say that these misleading figures in fact hide another reality, and are calling on authorities to open the files for clarification. A Commission to Clean Up Voting or Suppress the Vote? – President Trump has ordered the creation of a high-level commission to examine electoral fraud, which he says was committed by millions around the US. According to an announcement by the White House, the Presidential Commission on Election Integrity aims to clean up the electoral system, eliminating practices that could lead to fraud in voting and the voter rolls. However, civic leaders warn that behind this initiative are plans for massive voter suppression among people of color. Centennial of the Great Writer Juan Rulfo – This week marks one year since the birth of Juan Nepomuceno Carlos Pérez Rulfo Vizcaíno, the Mexican writer better known as Juan Rulfo, who achieved broad international acclaim though he only wrote two books. His novel, Pedro Páramo, and his collection of short stories, El llano en llamas (The Plain in Flames), offer brutal portrayals of violence in Mexico after the Revolution of 1910, which some have compared to contemporary violence there.
