Traditional Mayan Celebration Puts Down Roots in San Francisco – The Vaquería is one of the most popular traditions of the southern Mexican state of Yucatán. It is a traditional festival, with origins in colonial times, when the owner of an hacienda would brand cattle and invite friends to a party where the wives of the cattle-herders would dance. This party would also be celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the hacienda or town. Immigrant workers of Mayan origin, brought this tradition from the state of Yucatán to the San Francisco Bay Area more than a decade ago, and it’s putting down roots. Fernando Andrés Torres brings us the story.
