Funds Needed to Fight Zika Virus – Thirteen babies have been born in the United States with microcephalia related to the Zika virus. Although in those cases, the virus was acquired outside the country, there are now cases of Zika transmitted by mosquito bites in Southern Florida, and thousands of cases more in Puerto Rico. Despite this public health emergency, Congress went to its summer recess without approving one cent to fight the illness. On Radio Bilingue’s flagship program Línea Abierta, we spoke about this with a congressman and doctor, a health official, and an activist. Marco Vinicio González reports.

OaxaCalifornians Make Their Grandparents’ Celebration Their Own – Almost three decades ago, immigrants brought the Guelaguetza, a celebration of the indigenous cultures of the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, to California. This year in Los Angeles, thousands of Oaxacans and Angelinos celebrated in an outdoor park. During two days, people enjoyed banda music, traditional indigenous dance, and delicious Oaxacan mole. A large number of the musicians and dancers were young Angelinos, the children or grandchildren of immigrants from Oaxaca, who report feeling proud of the land of their parents, without forgetting they are also American, or as they say, OaxaCalifornian. Our correspondent in Los Angeles, Rubén Tapia, takes us to the festivities.
