Civil Rights Claim Against Medi-Cal – While the Affordable Care Act opened the doors of Medi-Cal to many low-income Latinos more, many still face serious barriers when visiting the doctor. This is because the low reimbursement rates paid by the state discourage doctors from seeing patients of this public health program. This is affecting a high number of Latino beneficiaries, according to advocacy groups who have filed a federal complaint against California alleging civil rights violations against Latinos and other Medi-Cal beneficiaries. Araceli Martínez spoke with a family who is having a hard time to get health care.

Quetzal: New Sound of California. – The award-winning musical group Quetzal has been recreating the sound of the musical landscape of Los Angeles by blending the traditional Mexican son jarocho with the rhythms of rock, R&B, and working together with immigrant musicians from other nations, united in their common quest for social justice and search for their cultural roots. This week, the group performed at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in the National Mall, as part of the program “Sounds of California.” Chelis López talked with Quetzal Flores, the leader of the band, and the recognized master of Son from Veracruz Ramón Gutiérrez.
