Supreme Court Upholds Affirmative Action and Effectively Blocks DAPA/DACA – Two decisions of particular transcendence for Latinos came out of the Supreme Court this week. The highest court in the nation dumped a bucket of cold water and the hopes of nearly 5 million undocumented immigrants to obtain relief through executive actions known as DACA and DAPA. Separately, the court upheld the consideration of race as a factor in college admissions, which could increase the presence of Latinos and other minority groups at universities. Arizona Activists Block Streets to Protest Immigration Deadlock – In response to the deadlock in the Supreme Court which effectively maintains the block of DAPA and DACA, dozens of protesters blocked the street outside the Immigration offices in Phoenix, Arizona. Radio Bilingüe’s news director, Samuel Orozco, spoke on the program Línea Abierta with Dulce Matuz, of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, about what happened there.
Mexico’s Government Responds To Teacher Protest with Brutal Violence – For more than a month, thousands of teachers in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico have been striking to protest the education reform being pushed through by the federal government. The reform would make it easier to fire teachers and could abolish the system of normal schools to prepare them. This week, a violent police operation against the teachers who are against the reform left eleven dead and more than a hundred wounded. The police repression has provoked international condemnation and more protests in other states in Mexico. Vladimir Flores has more from Oaxaca.
