Latino and African-American Renters Protest Mass Evictions in L.A. – Los Angeles is one of the cities with the most prohibitive costs of rent in the whole country. In several areas of the city, construction and remodeling of old apartment buildings has caused the displacement of many poor families, many of whom are Latino and African-American, who had lived there for decades. Some families end up living in the street. To try and stop the evictions, groups of renters are getting together and proposing municipal measures to protect housing. California Inaugurates Health Plan for Undocumented Minors – This weekend, California will be one step closer to having healtheir children. On May 1st, the Health for All law goes into effect, expanding the state health insurance, Medi-Cal, and offering complete coverage to undocumented minors who qualify. Araceli Martínez takes us to the community Romero Clinic, in Los Angeles, where new children are enrolling every day in the state program.
What is the Federal Government Doing to Better Educate Our Bilingual Children? – Being able to speak, read and write two languages is an important and much valued asset in our current world. However, many times children who start school in the U.S. speaking a language other than English end up losing their original language and, still having trouble learning English. In an interview with the new U.S. Secretary of Education, John King, Jr, Radio Bilingüe’s news director, Samuel Orozco, asked him what the Department of Education will do to invest in better teaching for children who speak other languages, such as Spanish.
