Two Degrees: What’s at Play in the Climate Change Talks – This week, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change began in Paris, with a goal to come to an ambitious global agreement to reduce global warming. There is disagreement about, among other things, who should be responsible for reducing carbon emissions. Farm Workers in Mexico Form Historic Independent Union – After massive strikes to protest low salaries and conditions of exploitation, farm workers from the fields of San Quintín in northern Mexico, where many crops are grown for export, decided to form their own independent union to negotiate contracts with their employers. It is a historic step in a country where official unions with ties to the government usually sign contracts in the name of workers, to protect employers from collective contracts. Our correspondent Rubén Tapia was present at the historic event to found the independent farm workers’ union.
Latinas Make History When Elected to Yakima City Council – In Yakima, Washington, when the old system of general elections was abolished and residents could begin voting by district, for the first time in history they elected Latina women to the city council. Three Latinas were elected, making the council majority women for the first time as well. They promise major changes in this historically conservative region.
