Program Announcement – Cinco de Mayo Radio Specials

“Cantos de San José” and “Mujeres del Son Jarocho.”

Radio Bilingüe is pleased to announce the broadcast of a special radio series in celebration of the Cinco de Mayo Holiday week, a tradition with deep roots in California.

The programming, part of the series “Sounds of California,” includes two sets of live-recorded concerts, feature reports, and radio conversations.

The first, entitled “Cantos de San José,” features emblematic songs and stories of community pride and resiliency recorded in the neighborhoods of East San José. The voices and music were recorded during a gathering of local artists from Hawaiian, African-American, and Chicano backgrounds, people who call the historic Mayfair District their home. The programs will air on the following times:

Talk show, Friday, May 4th, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM PDT (English)

Concert, Saturday, May 5th, 5:00 – 6:30 PM PDT (English)

The audio files are now available online, on demand, on Radio Bilingüe’s archives:

The second package of feature stories, conversations and concerts is entitled “Mujeres del Son Jarocho,” and it captures sounds of the Sixth Son Jarocho Festival in San Francisco, which highlighted the innovative work of accomplished maestras jaraneras, women who are changing the sound and lyrics of the Mexican tradition of Son Jarocho and the cultural soundscape of California.

Talk show, Sunday, May 6th, 6:00 PM – 7 PM PDT (English)

Concert, Monday, May 7th, 10 AM – 11:30 AM PDT (Spanish)

If you miss the on-air programs, you can find the audio files archived online:

The 10-minute feature stories will broadcast at various times during Radio Bilingüe’s daytime programming from May 5th through May 20th.

The broadcast series “Sounds of California” is a production of Radio Bilingüe in partnership with the Alliance for California Traditional Arts and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage. Funding was granted in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. The California Arts Council provided additional funding.
