This week saw the end of the first charter school strike in California. A group of 80 teachers from the charter school network known as Accelerated Schools, organized under United Teachers Los Angeles, demanded job stability and an end to dismissal without the right to arbitration. The agreements reached include better health insurance and a severance package for teachers.

After six days on strike, tens of thousands of teachers in Los Angeles have returned to the classroom. The settlement between the teachers’ union and school authorities includes higher salaries, smaller class sizes, and more support staff.

More than 30,000 Los Angeles teachers went on strike this week. Teachers in the school district, the second largest in the nation, are demanding a salary increase and more resources for teaching.
